2010 NMMA Boat & Sportshows Put Affordability Front and Center to Attract Entry-Level Buyers

Feature Area Highlights Boats that Account for 95 Percent of Boats on the Water Today
Chicago, IL – Dec. 7, 2009 – While consumers continue to watch their budgets and prioritize discretionary income, thousands of potential boat buyers are still looking for deals and interested in buying a boat. As a result, 2010 NMMA shows throughout the U.S. intend on attracting these buyers with the Affordability Pavilion – a special area on the show floor featuring boats that can be financed for $250 or less per month.

While recreational boating in the U.S. is perceived to be an activity for the affluent, the vast majority of boaters are middleclass. According to the National Marine Manufacturers Association’s 2008 Recreational Boating Statistical Abstract, approximately 75 percent of boat owners have a household income under $100,000, and an estimated 95 percent of boats on the water today are trailerable boats that are 26 feet or less.

“As we pull out of the recession, we want to make sure interested buyers are aware that boating is within reach. The Affordability Pavilion is an excellent way for our exhibitors to break down the costs associated with boating and illustrate just how affordable boating can be.” noted Ben Wold, executive vice president of NMMA who also oversees all NMMA boat shows.

The Affordability Pavilion makes its debut at the 2010 Kansas City Boat & Sportshow, St. Louis Boat & Sportshow, and Northwest Sportshow. It will return for the second year to the 2010 Atlanta Boat Show; Atlantic City International Power Boat Show; Baltimore Boat Show; Chicago Boat, RV & Outdoors Show; Louisville Boat, RV & Sportshow; Miami International Boat Show & Strictly Sail Miami; Minneapolis Boat Show; Nashville Boat & Sportshow; and New York Boat Show.
